Création :

22 septembre 1869, Hoftheater de Munich, sous la direction de Franz Wüllner.
Composé en 1853-1854, l’ouvrage fut représenté à Munich contre la volonté de Wagner, à l’initiative du roi Louis II de Bavière, avant la création du cycle complet au Festspielhaus de Bayreuth en août 1876.

Livret :

Wagner rédige le poème du Ring à rebours (La Mort de Siegfried d’abord, puis Siegfried, La Walkyrie et enfin L’Or du Rhin, 1852). Il puise dans l’Edda, la Völsunga saga et le Nibelungenlied.

Intrigue :

• Scène 1 : Au fond du Rhin, les trois Filles du Rhin gardent l’or. Alberich, moqué par elles, renonce à l’amour et dérobe l’or pour en forger un anneau qui donne la puissance universelle.
• Scène 2 : Wotan a fait bâtir le Walhall par les géants Fasolt et Fafner, à qui il a promis Freia, déesse de la jeunesse. Loge lui conseille de leur offrir l’or d’Alberich à la place.
• Scène 3 : Au Nibelheim, Alberich a asservi les Nibelungen. Wotan et Loge le capturent par ruse et exigent l’or, le heaume magique et l’anneau pour sa rançon. Alberich maudit l’anneau.
• Scène 4 : Les géants reçoivent l’or et l’anneau ; Fafner tue Fasolt. Erda met Wotan en garde contre l’anneau. Donner dissipe les nuées, et les dieux gagnent le Walhall par un arc-en-ciel, tandis que les Filles du Rhin déplorent la perte de leur or.
